WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Wilmington women's soccer team is putting others first this holiday season.

Instead of its usual tradition, where teammates buy presents for each other, the team raised $360 to purchase toys to donate to the United States Marine Corps Reserve for distribution this Christmas.

"Every year we have a Christmas party where we exchange gifts, and we decided this year to use the money to give to the less fortunate," said head coach Paul Cairney.

Junior midfielder Shannon Robertson took the lead on the project, and went with her Seahawk teammates recently to a local toy store to pick up an assortment of gifts, including stuffed animals, musical instruments, sporting goods and dolls.

Michael Gautier with the Marine Corps Reserve collected two boxes of gifts early Thursday in the women’s soccer locker room.
