#11/12 TOWSON 33, UCONN 18 (F)
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Terrance West ran for 156 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Tigers (1-0) earned their first-ever win over an NCAA FBS opponent, a 33-18 victory over the University of Connecticut (0-1) in the season opener for both teams at Rentschler Field on Thursday evening.
The win especially meaningful for Coach Rob Ambrose, who served as an assistant coach at UConn for seven years.
West, who recorded the 12th 100-yard game of his career, clinched the victory when he scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 16 seconds remaining in the game. That thwarted a UConn comeback and gave Towson its first win in seven attempts against NCAA FBS opponents...
rv/rv DELAWARE 51, JACKSONVILLE 35 (F)
NEWARK, Del. – The Dave Brock Era at the University of Delaware got off to a roaring start Thursday night at Delaware Stadium as the Blue Hens scored 24 unanswered points to overcome an early two-touchdown deficit and cruised to a 51-35 victory over Jacksonville in the college football opener for both teams.
Brock, just the fifth head coach at Delaware since the 1940’s, saw his team start out rocky but finish strong as the Blue Hens (1-0) won their home opener for the ninth straight season and for the 22nd time in the last 24 years.
Delaware’s aggressive attack piled up a whopping 611 yards of total offense - the highest for a UD team since gaining 620 in a 30-17 NCAA playoff win over Portland State in 2000 - while the defense held the Dolphins (0-1) to just 224 total yards and negative 37 yards rushing, the third lowest total allowed in UD history. Jacksonville, which jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scored three of its touchdowns either directly off turnovers or from short distances several plays later...
FORDHAM 51, RHODE ISLAND 26 (F)
BRONX, N.Y. – Rhode Island (0-1) fell behind 14-0 early in the first quarter and was not able to recover as it opened the season with a 51-26 loss at Fordham.
Fordham (1-0) hit on several big plays, scoring on touchdown plays of 61, 49, 32, and 29 yards, and adding a 61-yard interception return for a defensive score. Quarterback Mike Nebrich threw four touchdown passes, connecting twice with Brian Wetzel and once with Sam Ajala.
Rhody scored three second half touchdowns, but was unable to cut the deficit to single digits at any point. The loss was the 14th straight for the Rams...
