CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - March 13
UNCW senior Kosta Blank (Winnipeg, Canada) and the William & Mary tandem of senior Anton Andersson (Bastad, Sweden) and sophomore Aaron Chaffee (Frisco, Texas) earned CAA men's tennis honors for the week ending March 10. Receiving honors on the women's side were UNCW sophomore Alyssa Ritchie (Franklin, Ohio), UNCW freshman Christine Kharkevich (Houston, Texas) and James Madison freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa.).
Blank was selected as the CAA men's tennis Player of the Week after posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dominique Johnson of 20th-ranked Clemson at No. 4 singles in the Seahawks' 5-2 setback to the Tigers. Blank improved his singles record to 6-3 on the season.
Andersson and Chaffee were honored as the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after going 1-1 at the No. 1 doubles position against a pair of nationally ranked ACC teams. The duo clinched the doubles point in the Tribe's match with 62nd-ranked Georgia Tech by defeating Juan Spir and Eduardo Segura, 8-4. It was third win of the season for Andersson and Chaffee, who also fell 8-4 to Yannick Maden and Zachary Rigsby of 20th-ranked Clemson.
Ritchie and Wirth share CAA women's tennis Player of the Week honors after both went undefeated last week. Ritchie was 4-0 last week in three different spots in the Seahawks' lineup. She beat Evansville's Mina Milovic, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, blanked Butler's Sienna Reuter, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, topped N.C. State's Elisha Hande, 6-0, 7-6 (2) at No. 5 and cruised past East Tennessee's Sofia Espana, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Ritchie improved her record to 8-3 for the season.
Wirth upped her record to 6-0 in singles after a 3-0 week for JMU. The freshman rolled past Penn's Emma Whitfield, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6, pulled out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Ball State's Kristel Sanders at No. 5 and defeated Toledo's Lexy Pitt 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. She has won nine straight matches dating back to the fall season. Wirth and doubles partner Katherine Bulling also went 2-1 in doubles at the No. 2 slot.
Ritchie and Kharkevich were names the CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after going 4-0 at the No. 3 spot. The tandem got past Evansville's Gaby Fifer and Emily Richardson, 8-5, shut out Butler's Kristen Haeberlein and Clare Cornelius, 8-0, edged N.C. State's Chloe Smith and Sophie Nelson, 8-5, and defeated ETSU's Sofia Espana and Salma Dahbi, 8-2. They have a team-best 8-3 record this season.
