Evans, Watford Named AFCA All-Americans
RICHMOND, Va. - A pair of CAA Football seniors in New Hampshire linebacker Matt Evans and James Madison offensive lineman Earl Watford represent the league on the 2012 American Football Coaches Association All-America Team, as announced by the organization on Wednesday. Both student-athletes are also two-time CAA Football First Team All-Conference selections.
Evans closed out his senior campaign with a league-high 115 tackles, including 77 solo stops, and ranks 19th nationally with 10.5 tackles per game. A native of Hanover, Mass., the Wildcats senior co-captain and 2011 Buck Buchanan Award Winner ended his career in Durham as the school's all-time tackles leader and FCS Football's active tackles leader with 449 career stops.
Watford allowed just one sack and had 25 knockdowns while leading a Dukes offense that ranked fourth in the league in rushing with 209.0 yards per game and 4.6 yards per rush. The Philadelphia product and senior co-captain ends his career in Harrisonburg after securing 35 straight starts and 37 overall starts in his 43 games played.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently designates teams in all five of the collegiate divisions that are chosen exclusively by coaches. CAA Football leads all FCS conferences with 119 appearances by 109 players who have been featured on the organization's All-America Team since its inception in 1979.
