Handy Finishes Ninth In NCAA Long Jump, Verburg Advances

DES MOINES, Iowa (June 6, 2012) - George Mason senior Lavell Handy finished ninth in the long jump and junior sprinter David Verburg advanced to the finals of the 400 meter dash in day one action of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Drake University on Wednesday.

Handy recorded a distance of 7.65m in his second of three jumps in the long jump to help advance him to the finals of the event. However, he was unable to top that mark in his three jumps of the finals as he finished the competition in ninth place.

Verburg continued his quest for a 400m title, winning the first of three heats in a time of 45.17, good for sixth overall. He returns to the track in the finals of the event on Friday at 7:55 pm.

Also competing for the Patriots on Wednesday was junior Mandissa Marshall, who no heighted in the women's pole vault.

The action continues Thursday at both Mason 4x400 meter relay teams are in action, along with William & Mary senior Brandon Heroux (Javelin Throw) and sophomore Elaina Balouris (10,000 meters).
