WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (December 12, 2011) -- The William & Mary Baseball team
recently participated in the 5th annual Reading Day at New Kent
Elementary School located in New Kent, Virginia on December 8, 2011. Taking time out from exam studying, the team
travelled to New Kent with Head Coach Frank Leoni. The Tribe baseball players participate every
year in the event, which occurs just prior to the College's winter break. The event allows the team to spend time
reading and getting to know some of the students at New Kent Elementary School,
during which time the team emphasizes the importance of reading and academic
success in achieving personal goals. Each student-athlete spends roughly 20
minutes with each class, reading a book, fielding questions, and interacting
with the students.
"We view it as integral to the success of the
team to have the support of our local community behind us. New Kent Reading Day allows us to show the
people that support us throughout our season how much we support and appreciate
them as well", said sophomore pitcher Matt Houston. "The ability to give back,
especially around the holiday season, is incredibly rewarding." Tribe baseball remains committed to giving in
the community, as illustrated by their efforts this fall in hosting two clinics
for physically challenged adults, as well as their work at the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation Walk.
