WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teamed up with the local chapter of the American Red Cross to collect 188 productive units during the annual CAA Blood Challenge Thursday at the Warwick Center on campus.
The drive was part of the annual competition conducted by the Colonial Athletic Association between the league's 12 schools. Students, faculty and staff donated blood for the 10th event.
The CAA Blood Challenge was introduced in 2002 by the CAA's presidents to emphasize the critical importance of giving blood. All 12 CAA institutions stage a campus-wide drive during the fall semester and CAA officials then determine which school collected the most productive units for the drive and present a trophy to the winner.
The Seahawks contributed 258 units of blood of the 4,718 total units collected last year. Drexel won the competition for the fifth straight year, collecting 1,045 productive units, while every member school recruited at least 90 donors.
