WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW athletics department commemorated the events of September 11, 2001, with a special “9/11 Remembrance Day” on Sunday, unfurling a gigantic flag and raising more than $1,000 for the Wilmington Firefighters' Memorial Garden.

The activities coincided with the 2011 Courtyard by Marriott Tournament hosted by the men’s soccer team at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

With a picture-perfect day as a backdrop, approximately 50 student-athletes carried a 30 by 60-foot flag to midfield before the UNCW-Wofford game. Following a moment of silence, former men’s tennis coach Larry Honeycutt sang the National Anthem as the impressive flag fluttered in a cool breeze.

A bidding process for the colorful red, white and blue game jerseys worn by the Seahawks raised $1,063.25 for the Wilmington Firefighters' Memorial Garden. The garden is being built by the Wilmington Fire Department to honor six of the city's finest who have lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as the 343 New York firefighters who died on 9/11.
