Hempstead,
N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2010) - This past weekend, the Hofstra Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC) sponsored two events.
On Friday, December 10, SAAC hosted the First Hofstra Pride Date Auction in the
Student Center Plaza Rooms. Nineteen students, including one
student-athlete from each athletic team at Hofstra, as well as a cheerleader
and dance team member, volunteered to be auctioned off for charity.
Over $1,000 was raised in support of the Special Olympics-NY. Jennifer
Woishins, the Associate Director of Development for the Special Olympics on
Long Island, spoke about the different initiatives run through their
organization and thanked the crowd for their generosity. Woishins was
accompanied by Donna, who is a Special Olympics athlete. She discussed
how meaningful her athletic participation has been, and received a standing
ovation from the crowd. Over 250 people attended the event, including
student-athletes and other members of the Hofstra community.
In addition, on Sunday, December 12, SAAC hosted an All-Sport Challenge.
This event featured two athletes from each athletic team, who participated in a
male vs. female competition. The athletes took part in 11 challenges,
which included a variety of different sports. Highlighted events included
tug-o-war, the half-court shot, the soccer challenge and dodgeball. Despite
a valiant effort by the women's team, the men came out on top with a 7-4
victory.
