WILMINGTON, N.C. (Jan. 11, 2011) - UNCW student-athletes recently delivered 622 new pairs of socks to non-profit organization "Comfort Socks" to assist the homeless during the winter months.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) conducted sock drives at the women's basketball game vs. Ohio on Jan. 29 and the men's basketball game vs. Toledo on Dec. 30. It marks the third year that UNCW has contributed socks to the organization.
"Our student-athletes are always excited about the opportunity to give back," said Rodney Young, SAAC advisor. "The total number of socks collected has increased each year. We appreciate the Wilmington community coming out to support our student-athletes, the athletics department and this great cause."
Theresa Tese, founder and organizer of Comfort Socks, says the contributions will go a long way toward helping those less fortunate.
"Comfort Socks is so proud to welcome the support of the UNCW Athletics Department," Tese said. "This last event, which included a reduced price admission to men's and women's basketball games with a sock donation, proved to be a real slam dunk for the Comfort Socks mission.
"With more than 600 pairs collected from this effort alone, Comfort Socks can sleep soundly knowing they are loved by UNCW, its student-athletes and fans. Helping over 600 people is no small matter - we are proud to know that UNCW takes our mission seriously and welcome the university's support for many years to come."
