WILMINGTON, N.C. (Nov. 3. 2010) - UNCW men's basketball coach Buzz Peterson and top aide Jamie Kachmarik will be competing in a free throw shooting contest this month to benefit "Shots From The Heart," a national initiative being conducted by popular website CollegeInsider.com.
The project, designed to memorialize former Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser and benefit the American Heart Association, will feature two 64-coach fields in an NCAA Tournament bracket format.
"Skip was a close friend of ours, so we're very pleased to participate in this event," said Buzz Peterson, UNCW's first-year coach. "Heart disease is a very serious disease. We hope this contest will bring more awareness to the cause as well as raise some much-needed funds for research."
Peterson and Kachmarik will each shoot 25 free throws on a date to be determined at Trask Coliseum. The tallies will then be forwarded to Angela Lento of CollegeInsider.com, who will complete the brackets and schedule future matchups. The competition, like the NCAA Tournament in March, includes First Round, Second Round, Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final Four pairings.
To avoid ties, 1-20 shots made are worth one point, shots 21-24 are worth two points and shot 25 is worth three points. The free throw champion will be recognized at the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet at the Final Four in Houston.
Peterson is matched up against Memphis Head Coach Josh Pastner in the South bracket, while Kachmarik will take on Butler's Darnell Archey in the North bracket.
Fans and businesses are encouraged to pledge money for each shot made by the coaches. Those interested in sponsoring made shots are asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org. For donations, checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association and mailed to: CollegeInside.com, 410 Prospect Street, Norwood, MA 02052.
