WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary junior gymnast Max Sabert's motto: "We are all part of something bigger than ourselves."

The SAAC Service Committee chair put his beliefs in action this year, initiating a major service project for the SAAC. Sabert pursued contacts with local Matthew Whaley Elementary School and formed the Tribe Tutors, a group of over 75 student athletes from 15 teams who volunteer time each week in the school.

Prior to going out to the school, the tutors participated in a training night with the school guidance counselor and a professional mentor trainer to prepare for the experience.  Tutors then arranged for weekly meetings with individual students or classes through contacts with teachers.

Feedback to date indicates the partnership is a successful one, as teachers have expressed appreciation for the athletes' consistent commitments to their mentees and high level of service, and athletes note the satisfaction of working with the youngsters.

Sabart and the SAAC have plans to continue and expand the venture next year.
