PHILADELPHIA - On December 14th Members of the Drexel Women's Basketball team traveled to the Horizon House in a nearby Philadelphia suburb to deliver the 12 boxes of gently used clothing they had collected for the residents.
Horizon House mental health services, located in Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties, and the state of Delaware, are comprehensive, integrated and continuous. A pioneer in the field of community-based treatment and rehabilitation, Horizon House utilizes a holistic approach aimed at addressing an individual's psychiatric, medical and behavioral health impediments. The overarching goal of Horizon House's interventions is to support, to the fullest extent possible, the individual's active membership in his or her family and community.
During the Holiday Season, the team decided to find a way to meet some basic needs of people less fortunate and bring some hope and joy into their hearts by making a personal visit. The Horizon House was a perfect fit for the Dragons. They did a great job spreading the word to fellow student-athletes, staff and coaches to donate to Horizon House and took the time to sort and package the clothes so they were easy to distribute.
The residents of Horizon House have a variety of special needs. The team sat down with them in a room and talked a little bit about themselves and what it is like to play college basketball and go to Drexel. It did not take long before the residents piped up with their questions about the Dragon's season and to challenge them to do their best in the CAA.
The team realized how doing something so simple can mean so much. Their visit was an "event" for the residents that included cake and socializing. After getting a tour and hearing from the residents how much they loved Horizon House, the Dragons gained a new respect for the staff and administration at the home.
It was clear that that day the Dragons knew they made a difference. It also made them appreciate what they have and their capacity to change other people's lives in a positive manner.
As a follow up, the Dragons are hosted the residents of the Horizon House at two games and they will continue to visit and make donations to this special group of people....
