During the 2009 fall term, Drexel University's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) coordinated a community service project to benefit children and families from the West Philadelphia Community Center (WPCC). Each varsity team "adopted" one or more families from the local community who applied through WPCC to receive some assistance during the holiday season.

Families provided SAAC with their names and ages, as well as interests, needs and a "wish list" for the holidays. Drexel student-athletes then worked together within their teams and as a large group to coordinate purchasing gifts, household items, clothing and other necessities to provide a total of 22 families with a more enjoyable holiday season.

The families were also invited to Drexel's campus to meet the teams and attend a women's basketball game on December 5, 2009. Those who attended enjoyed hot chocolate and snacks while visiting with Drexel student-athletes and opening their holiday gifts. The event was well-attended and gave student-athletes and families the opportunity to meet and enjoy the holiday season together.

This is the second year Drexel Athletics and SAAC have coordinated this project with the WPCC. To date, the project has benefited about 40 families in the Mantua community. The Drexel Student-Athletes enjoy taking some time out from studying, practices and games to work together and give back to the community in appreciation for the support of Drexel, and specifically Athletics, throughout the year.
