The Northeastern University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collected donations on Saturday January 23rd at the Men’s Basketball game vs. VCU, in efforts towards the Haitian Relief Fund. The students put together a Public Service Announcement in order to make fans and visitors aware of the tragedy in Haiti and the NU SAAC collection efforts. As a journalism minor here at Northeastern University, SAAC member and NU Swimmer, Rachel Mondello wrote up the PSA which stated the following:

As we are all well aware, Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake last Tuesday (January 19th, 2010). According to Haitian authority records, tens of thousands of deaths have been reported and millions of people’s lives and homes have been destroyed. The heart wrenching pictures that you see on TV can only show a portion of the tragedy of this poverty stricken country. As students we can make a difference by donating as much as we can to a country that is a neighbor in dire need. This recovery will take a long time and your continuing support will be greatly appreciated by the people who are suffering in Haiti. Please donate as much as you can tonight to the student volunteers who are collecting for the Haitian Relief Fund and if you cannot donate tonight please consider donating to the American Red Cross or other relief organizations.

All the student’s hard work paid off as we were able to collect $521.31 for the Haitian Relief Fund. We will be donating all the money to the American Red Cross for direct relief in Haiti. Thanks for everyone’s generous donations and thanks to all the students for their continued efforts!  Go Huskies!
