WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington’s cross country teams recently did their part to keep North Carolina’s highway a cleaner place for drivers to enjoy via the state’s Adopt-A-Highway program.

Twenty-two members of the teams awakened early on a Saturday morning to collect trash and debris on I-40 outside Wilmington.

The Seahawks gathered more than 20 trash bags in the one-mile stretch, including bottles, cans, cigarette butts, discarded CD’s and even a torn $10 bill.

“Our student-athletes understand that they have a responsibility to give back to the community,” said Layne Schwier, assistant track and field/cross country coach. “It was a chilly day, but they were pleased to represent our department in the community.”
