Three CAA Baseball Teams Earn NCAA Berths
The CAA had three teams selected to the NCAA Baseball Championship for the first time since 2001 as CAA champion Towson was joined in the 64-team field by the top two teams in the CAA regular-season standings – UNCW and William & Mary.
Towson (29-28) received a #3 seed in the Chapel Hill, N.C. regional and will face Florida Atlantic (39-20) at 1 p.m. in its opening game on Friday. Also in the regional are #1 overall seed North Carolina and Canisius. The Tigers, who defeated William & Mary 5-2 last Saturday to capture their first CAA title, are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991.
UNCW (37-21) earned a #2 seed in the Charlottesville, Va. Regional and will meet future CAA member Elon (32-28) at 6 p.m. on Friday. Also in the regional are #6 overall seed Virginia and Army. The Seahawks are making their sixth appearance in the regionals since 2003 and are in the regionals for the second year in a row.
William & Mary (37-22) was awarded a #3 seed in the Raleigh, N.C. regional and will take on Ole Miss (37-22) in its first game at 2 p.m. on Friday. Also in the regional are host N.C. State and Binghamton. The Tribe is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001.
All three first-round games involving in CAA teams will be televised on ESPN3.
It’s the fourth time that the CAA has had three teams invited to the NCAA Baseball Championship field. It also happened in 1995, 1999 and 2001.
