UNCW Heads To NCAA's
CAA champion UNCW will take on SEC runner-up Vanderbilt on Friday at 2 p.m., in the opening game of the Raleigh Regional of the NCAA Baseball Championship.
Joining the Seahawks and Commodores are top-seeded NC State (39-17) and fourth-seed and Northeast Conference champion Sacred Heart (25-30). Those two schools will play at 7 p.m. All games will be played on the NCSU campus at Dail Park.
The Seahawks are making their fifth NCAA tournament appearance after capturing their third CAA title with a 10-8 win over Delaware in the championship game last weekend in Harrisonburg, Va. UNCW will be making its first appearance in the tournament since the 2008 season when they lost to North Carolina in the regional championship in Cary, N.C.
The Commodores, who will be making their seventh straight trip to the NCAA tournament, will be the second seed in the regional and the Seahawks are the third-seed. Vanderbilt enters the regional with a record of 33-26 and had a nine-game winning streak halted by SEC champion Mississippi State in the SEC title game.
Ticket information for the regional will be announced later on Monday.
Notes: UNCW is a three-seed for the fourth time, was the two-seed in 2008 ... The Seahawks are playing in a North Carolina regional for the fourth time, having appeared in Kinston (2004), Chapel Hill (2006) and Cary (2008) ... UNCW has never faced Vanderbilt or Sacred Heart ... The Seahawks dropped a pair of early season decisions to the host Wolfpack.
