UNCW Takes the Lead at CAA Men's Golf Championship, UD's Matthias Shoots His Way to Top of Leaderboard
WILMINGTON, Del. (April 28, 2012) -UNCW pulled ahead of Georgia State to take a slim one-stroke lead after the second round of the 2012 CAA Men's Golf Championship at the Wilmington Country Club South Course. Delaware's Greg Matthias carded a daily and tournament low 68 on the second round to take the lead among the individuals.
Georgia State and Old Dominion are tied for second with two round scores of 597 each. George Mason follows four strokes behind leading UNCW and VCU and Delaware enter the final round tied for fifth, one stroke behind Mason. William & Mary (607) is in seventh place, while James Madison (609) follows in eighth. Towson (622), Drexel (629) and Hofstra (630) round out the 11 teams.
Matthias added five more birdies on the second round to lead the tournament with 11 total. The senior leads the individuals 2-under par after carding 68 in the second round. VCU's Marc Dobias (142), who led after the first round, stands in second place heading into the third round at even. Old Dominion's Jamison Randall (145), who entered the round in seventh, leaped to third place after shooting 70 in the second round. ODU's Tom Wilde and George Mason's Kevin Yerks eill enter the final round tied for fourth place (146).
UNCW's Payne McLeod has shot 5-over par (147) and stands in sixth place while leading the Seahawks. GSU's Tyler Gruca and Damon Stephenson head into the final round tied for seventh place after carding 148 for the two rounds, while UNCW's Patrick Sawrey and GSU's Davin White are currently tied for ninth place (149).UNCW's Thomas Bass, Georgia State's White and George Mason's Alec Kormanac each tallied an eagle on the course Saturday. Bass and Kormanac scored an eagle on the par 4 11th hole, while White posted an eagle on the par 5 14th hole. ODU's Randall scored a round-high seven birdies to move into third place.
The 54-hole championship is scheduled to continue on Sunday. The teams will start at split tees at 9:00 a.m. on the South Course. UNCW, GSU, ODU, Mason, VCU and Delaware will tee-off on the first tee, while the rest of the teams will tee-off on the 10th tee. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com
