RICHMOND, Va. (June 21, 2007) ? The Colonial Athletic Association has nominated Towson volleyball player Christina Grempler (Severna Park, Md.) and Northeastern track and field athlete Zara Northover (Elmont, N.Y.) for the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors senior female student-athletes for their cumulative collegiate achievements in service, leadership, athletics and academics.

Grempler earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in May, 2006 and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Towson. She was a four-year starter for the Tigers’ volleyball team, earning first-team All-CAA honors in 2006 and second-team all-conference accolades in 2005. The 6-foot-3 senior middle blocker led the league in hitting percentage and ranked second in blocks last season. Grempler completed her career as one of only three players in Towson history to record over 1,000 kills and 400 blocks.

In the classroom, Grempler made the Dean’s List in six of eight semesters and was chosen to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II team in 2005 and 2006. She also served as a volunteer and intern with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, worked with Habitat for Humanity in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and was a peer tutor in biology and chemistry.

Northover graduated last May with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and a minor in political science. The senior was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 2007 CAA Track & Field Championship after winning the shot put, discus and hammer to lead the Huskies to their first-ever CAA title. Her throw of 53’2.25 in the shot put broke the conference record. She went to place second in the shot at the NCAA East Regionals and 10th at the NCAA Track & Field Championship. Northover is a three-time ECAC and New England champion in the shot put and has qualified for the national championship in the event for the past three years.

Northover served as president of Northeastern’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2004-06 and was a Division I national SAAC representative. She received the Reggie Lewis Award For Community Involvement and Outstanding Achievement in Academics & Athletics, and was on the list of Northeastern’s Top 100 Most Influential Seniors.

The NCAA will determine the top 10 winners in each division in August and announce the national winner at a dinner in late October.
