NORFOLK, Va. (AP)-- Senior Jazzmin Walters scored a career-high 24 points to help Old Dominion beat Virginia 78-70 in a rematch of last season's second-round NCAA tournament game.
Senior Tiffany Green added 20 points and 12 rebounds and junior Jessica Canady had 16 points and 14 rebounds to help the No. 25 Lady Monarchs (3-1) win their 27th straight home game. They have the nation's second-longest streak behind Hartford's 28.
No. 16 Virginia (2-1), coming off an upset of Tennessee, pulled within 62-60 on Monica Wright's jumper with 4:35 to play, but got no closer. With Old Dominion up three in the final minute, Walters made one of two free throws and a layup to secure the win.
In the tournament last season, the Lady Monarchs won on Walters' three with 4.8 seconds to play in overtime.
VCU 65, Tulane 49

RICHMOND, Va. ? It was a staple of the 2007-2008 run to the Women’s NIT.
Aggressive, hard-nosed defense mixed with a balanced scoring attack.
The Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball flashed that same staple on Friday evening in the third round consolation game of the Preseason WNIT. Five different players scored at least eight points and the Rams forced 23 turnovers as they cruised past Tulane, 65-49.
Junior D’Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) was a force down low all night with nine points and seven rebounds, while senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior La’Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C.) poured in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Black and Gold improve to 2-1 on the year and are now an astounding 19-3 in games played in the month of November under Head Coach Beth Cunningham. Tulane falls to 1-2 in the early stages of the 2008-2009 campaign.
Sophomore Jessica Taylor (Northumberland, Va.) connected on a three-pointer from the right wing as the Rams jumped out to a 9-4 advantage with 16:12 remaining in the first half.
Indira Kaljo came off the bench to spark a 7-2 run by the Green Wave that tied the score at 11-11 with 13:12 left on the first half clock.
The Black and Gold responded with a run of their own as three points from Rorie led a 10-0 run that gave VCU a commanding 21-11 lead.
Brittany Lindsey scored six points in the final five minutes of the first half as Tulane got within three as the teams headed to the locker rooms with VCU leading 27-24.
Much like the first half the Rams came out firing as a steal and a fast-break lay-up by Taylor and a jumper by senior Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria) gave VCU a 31-24 advantage.
Tulane kept it close until Hollingsworth’s six points ignited 16-2 run that gave the Black and Gold a 56-38 lead with 4:48 remaining in regulation.
VCU’s lead would not shrink below double-digits the rest of the way as Hollingsworth and Bachvarova combined for 19 second-half points to outscore the Green Wave 38-25 in the final 20 minutes.
The Rams owned the glass all night with a 42-33 rebounding advantage as every player that played for VCU tallied a rebound.
VCU’s stalwart defense shined brightly with 11 steals, four by Taylor, as well as holding the Green Wave to just 22.2% from the field in the first-half.
Marist 93, Northeastern 65

The women’s basketball team dropped its home opener to Marist 93-65 Friday night at Solomon Court. Marist shot 55.6 percent from the field and had 26 assists on 35 baskets.
Junior forward Kim Carr who had a career-high 21 points along with eight rebounds led the Huskies. Freshmen Kashaia Cannon and Dani Iervolino chipped in with 11 points each.
Rachele Fitz of Marist had a career-high 36 points on 15-of-17 shooting spoiling the Huskies home opener. No other member of the team scored in double figures.
Before the game Head Coach Daynia La-Force Mann and the rest of the coaching staff honored senior guard Ashlee Feldman who scored her 1,000th point against St. John’s.
The Huskies (0-3) were left scoreless through the first three minutes of the half. But a Jasmine Crew jumper followed a Kim Carr two-pointer, brought NU to within one. The Red Foxes rallied back with a 13-0 run. Northeastern was able to cut down the lead thinks to a three-point play by Jamie Conroy. Corielle Yarde of Marist made a lay-up with .03 left on the clock putting the Red Foxes up 52-24 at the half.
Marist (2-0) had good ball movement making 20 baskets on 15 assists. The Red Foxes capitalized on their three-point shooting, as they made seven from behind the arc for 41.2 percent.
Marist started off the second half on a 6-0 run. A lay-up by Kim Carr ended the Husky scoring drought. The freshmen guard duo of Kashaia Cannon and Dani Iervolino gave Northeastern life off the bench. The two had a combined 19 points and made a total of five three pointers in the second half.
The Huskies shot 47.1 percent in the second half, but the Red Foxes were too much to stop allowing Marist to take a 93-65 victory.
