Northeastern Rallies Past Delaware, 7-6
HARRISONBURG, Va. (May 23, 2013) – Jason Vosler capped a four-run, ninth-inning rally with a two-run, two-out single to give Northeastern a 7-6 victory over Delaware Thursday in elimination play in the 2013 CAA Baseball Championship at Veterans Memorial Park.
By winning the tournament’s first losers’ bracket game, the fifth-seeded Huskies (29-25) advance to a 9:30 p.m. Thursday contest against an opponent to be determined. Third-seeded Delaware, which fell earlier Thursday to sixth-seeded James Madison in the completion of a suspended game, dropped to 33-22 for the season.
Northeastern used a leadoff home run, a walk and four singles in producing its final-inning rally after Delaware starter Adam Davis allowed the Huskies only six hits and three runs over the first eight innings.
Rob Fonseca started the Northeastern ninth with homer to right, and John Puttress’ single finished Davis’ outing. Delaware reliever Eric Buckland got the frame’s first out on a fly to the left field fence, but Pete Castoldi and Will Dougherty followed with singles. Buckland got the second out on a pop to short left but walked Brad Burcroff to load the bases. Vosler then greeted reliever Stephen Richter with a bounding hit to right field, allowing Castoldi and Doughterty to score.
Vosler’s game-winner was his third hit of the game. He also singled and scored during Northeastern’s two-run fourth and singled in the sixth. Puttress had an RBI single in the fourth in addition to his final-inning hit, and Sean Lyons singled twice for the Huskies.
Delaware got three hits and two RBI from Nick Ferdinand and two hits each from EJ Stoltzfus and Tyler Powell.
Michael Foster, Northeastern’s second pitcher, worked the final 2 1/3 innings for the victory, raising his season record to 2-1. He gave up four hits and a ninth-inning run while striking out four and walking one He followed starter Kevin Ferguson, who pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and nine hits while striking out four and walking one.
Buckland took the loss for Delaware, falling to 3-4 for the season.
Northeastern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without a hit. Aaron Barbosa was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a walk to Burcroff and to third on Vosler’s fly to right and scored on Michael Foster’s sacrifice fly to right.
Delaware scored three times in the fourth on four hits and an error to lead 3-1. Ferdinand led off with a double and scored when Stoltfus reached on an error, and Cameron Travalini and Ty Warrington later had RBI singles.
Northeastern pulled into a 3-3 tie in the fourth on an RBI double by Foster and a run-scoring single by Puttress after Vosler opened the inning with a single.
Delaware went back in front 5-3 in the top of the fifth when Jimmy Yesso led off with a single and Ferdinand hit a long home run to center, his 15th homer of the season.
The Blue Hens raised the lead to 6-3 in the top of the ninth when DJ Long led off with a single and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Chris Branigan after singles by Yesso and Stoltzfus.
