CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - March 19
RICHMOND, Va. (March 19, 2013) -
The CAA has honored seven men's and women's tennis players for outstanding
performances last week.
UNCW senior Chris Cooprider (Denver, Colo.) and the James Madison duo of senior
Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia) and
freshman Robert Stirling
(Caboolture, Australia) earned CAA men's tennis honors for the week ending
March 17. Recognized on the women's side were James Madison senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio), UNCW
junior Kelly Cameron (Hilton Head
Island, S.C.), and the Delaware tandem of junior Dorothy Safron (New York, N.Y.) and Carmen Lai (Sha Tin, Hong Kong).
Cooprider was selected as the
CAA men's tennis Player of the Week after leading the Seahawks to 7-0 victories
over 50th-ranked Yale and Illinois State. The senior outlasted Yale's
John Huang, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at the No. 1 position and cruised past ISU's Rolando
Torrellas, 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot. Cooprider has won eight of his last 10
singles matches for 72nd-ranked UNCW and is 11-3 on the season. He and
doubles partner Kosta Blank, who are ranked #18 in the nation, also defeated
#59 Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers of Yale, 9-7.
Pool and Stirling were honored
as the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after a strong effort in JMU's 5-2
conference win at Delaware. The Dukes' top tandem edged the Blue Hens' Troy
Beneck and Adam Lawton, 8-6, to help clinch the doubles point. In singles play,
Pool beat Beneck 6-3, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 and Stirling topped Mike Furr, 6-2, 6-4
at No. 4.
Bulling and Cameron share CAA
women's tennis Player of the Week honors after both won their singles and
doubles matches in impressive team victories. Bulling pulled out a 6-4, 4-6,
6-3 win over Georgetown's Sophie Panarese at No. 4 singles in the Dukes' 5-2
triumph over Georgetown. She also clinched the doubles point with partner Cara
Wirth as they topped Georgetown's Liz Hamlin and Madeline Jaeger, 8-5, at the
No. 2 spot.
Cameron posted a 6-4, 6-1
victory at No. 3 singles as UNCW knocked off 65th-ranked Appalachian
State 7-0. She improved her singles mark to 10-3 this season. Cameron and
partner Miller Hales also recorded an 8-2 win over the Mountaineers' Gabriela Celi
and Brianna Armellino at the No.3 doubles slot.
Safron and Lai were named the
CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after posting an 8-3 win over Villanova's
Mikelle Mancini and Tori Smyth at the No. 1 doubles spot as the Blue Hens'
rolled over the Wildcats, 7-0. Safron and Lai are 10-7 overall this season,
including 9-4 when playing at No. 1.
