Towson Wins 2013 CAA Women?s Swimming and Diving Championship
FAIRFAX, Va. (March 2, 2013) - Towson
University won the 2013 CAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship after totaling
783.5 points throughout the four-day event. The Tigers won four individual
events in the pool including a victory by junior Kaitlin Burke in the 1650
tonight. It is the fifth CAA title for Towson.
James Madison earned runner-up honors with
735.5 points while William & Mary finished third with 496 points. Taking
home fourth was UNCW with 359 points, Northeastern earned fifth place with 287
points. Delaware, Drexel, and George Mason rounded out the field in sixth,
seventh, and eighth respectively.
Several individual honors were given out at
the championship ceremony at the conclusion of the championship tonight.
Earning Diving Coach of the Year was Becky Benson of James Madison. Winning
Swimming Coach of the Year was Pat Mead of Towson. Kimberly Helfrich earned
Women's Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet. Winning the Co-Outstanding Swimmer of
the Meet awards was Kaitlin Burke of Towson and Carly Tanner of UNCW.
Burke kicked off the final night of the
championship with her third individual victory of the meet in the 1650 free. She
posted a 16:18.44 to win top honors while her teammate Cassaundra Sorna
finished second and William & Mary's Caylyn Tate finished third.
Tanner won her third gold metal of the meet
in the 100 free with a time of 49.91. Megan Howard of William & Mary and
Amanda Barber of Towson came home second and third.
James Madison won two individual events in
the final night. Kelsey Holmgaard won gold in the 200 breast with a time of
2:12.52. Her teammates made it a Dukes sweep with Sin Hye Won taking second,
and Shannon Dubay taking third. Also winning individual gold for JMU was Andrea
Criscuolo in the 200 fly. Criscuolo posted a time of 1:58.92 while Towson's
Melanie Rowland and ODU's Jessica Hubert took second and third.
In the 200 back final, Kimberly Rashleigh
of ODU won gold with a time of 2:56.46, setting a new meet record. George Mason's
Melissa Davis and JMU's Anna Susko rounded out the top three.
In the final event of the women's
championship, the William & Mary team of Megan Howard, Gabrielle Mizerak,
Jen Bentley, and Sara Shaner took home top honors in the 400 freestyle relay. The
JMU team of Holmgaard, Criscuolo, Carli Molano, and Susanne Gingher earned
second.
