UNCW Wins 12th Consecutive CAA Men?s Swimming and Diving Championship
FAIRFAX, Va. (March 2, 2013) - UNCW won the
2013 CAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship after tallying 674.5 points
over the four day meet. The Seahawks won eight individual events in the pool,
including four of the five relay events. It is the Seahawks 12th
consecutive CAA Championship.
William & Mary earned runner-up honors
with 633.5 points while George Mason finished third with 591 points. Taking
home fourth was Delaware with 382 points. Drexel earned fifth place with 355.5
points and Towson finished sixth with 298 points.
Several individual honors were given out at
the championship ceremony at the conclusion of the championship tonight.
Earning Diving Coach of the Year was Katryn Valladares of Drexel. Winning
Swimming Coach of the Year was Dave Allen of UNCW. Drexel's David Sanchez
earned Men's Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet. Winning the Co-Outstanding
Swimmer of the Meet awards were Andrew Strait of William & Mary and Sidni
Hoxha of Old Dominion.
The Seahawks won their fourth relay gold by
winning the 400 freestyle. The team of Joe Gallene, Gabe Thran, Nick Lowe, and
CJ Faila brought home the gold with a time of 2:57.01 while ODU's Hoxha, Victor
Sa, Ben Hansen, and Drew Crockett finished second.
UNCW's Valtteri Halonen and Gallene gave
the Seahawks its individual victories in the 200 back and 100 free on the final
night. Halonen posted a 1:44.49 to win the 200 back while Delaware's Ryan
Roberts and Justin Barden rounded out the top three. Gallene took home gold in
the 100 free by hitting the wall in 43.58. Joey Kelly of Mason earned runner-up
while UNCW's Lowe came home third.
In the final diving event of the championship,
Sanchez won gold on the three-meter board after collecting 331.9 points. Nick Guttendorf
of Mason earned silver and Brian Coonce of Delaware took home bronze.
Strait earned his final individual gold of
the championship in the 200 breast with a time of 1:58.93. UNCW teammates Ray
McGorry and Michael Baric came home second and third respectively.
William & Mary teammates Kemp Pettyjohn
and K.J. Shaw took home the gold in the 1650 free and the 200 fly. Pettyjohn
touched the wall in 15:25.48 to win the 1650 free. Bernardo Figuiredo of ODU
and Fernando Rubio of Mason came home second and third. Shaw collected top
honors in the 200 fly with a time of 1:46.92. Mason's David Kiss and ODU's Reed
Matthews took home silver and bronze.
