UNCW Men, Towson Women Take Leads at Second Day of CAA Swimming and Diving Championships
FAIRFAX, Va. (Feb. 28, 2013) - After
posting a victory in the 200 freestyle relay, the UNCW men took an 11 point
lead over George Mason at day two of the CAA Men's Swimming and Diving
Championship. On the women's side, Towson holds a slim six point lead over
James Madison after Kaitlin Burke's individual victory in the 500 free.
The defending 11-time champions Seahawks
set a new meet record in the 200 freestyle relay by a mere tenth of a second.
The team of CJ Faila, Stephen Conrad, Nick Lowe, and Joe Gallene earned UNCW 20
points after swimming a 1:19.08. The George Mason team of Austin Witherow,
Travis Lauri, Colin Schwartz, and Joey Kelly took second place honors.
In freestyle action, ODU junior Sidni Hoxha
took home top honors in the 50 free with a time of 19.78 while UNCW teammates
Gallene and Faila finished second and third respectively. Hoxha swam a 19.60 in
prelims to break his own meet record set last season.
Reigning CAA rookie of the year Kemp Pettyjohn
of William & Mary earned the victory in the 500 free with a time of
4:23.01. ODU's Bernard Figuiredo finished second, while Ryan Roberts of
Delaware rounded out the top three.
In the men's 200 IM, the Tribe's Andrew
Strait swam a 1:47.27 to take home top honors. George Mason's David Kiss and UNCW's
Ray McGorry finished second and third.
On the diving boards, Drexel senior Stephen
Cal took home top honors on the one-meter board with a score of 298.80. Mason's
Nick Guttendorf took home second place while Drexel's David Sanchez came home
third.
In women's action, Burke kicked off tonight's
finals by earning Towson 20 points with her victory in the 500 free with a time
of 4:43.53. The Tigers swept the top three spots with Cassaundra Sorna taking
runner up honors and Melanie Rowland taking third.
UNCW senior Carly Tanner took home top
honors in the 50 free with a time of 22.79 to give the UNCW women its first
individual title of the championship. William & Mary's Megan Howard hit the
wall second while Morgan Whyte of Delaware finished third.
JMU's
Kelsey Holmgaard picked up a victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.29. ODU's
Kimberly Rashleigh finished second while the Duke's Shannon Dubay rounded out
the top three.
In the only women's relay action of the
day, the William & Mary team of Megan Howard, Sara Shaner, Noelle Klockner,
and Greta Schneider won the200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.89. UNCW's
Tanner, Hannah Stephenson, Chelsea Tomko, and Rachel Sears took home second
place honors
The teams will return to the water tomorrow
for day three of the championships. Scheduled events in the pool include the
men's and women's 100 and 200 fly, 100 and 200 breast, and 100 back. On the
boards will be the women's one-meter diving.
