CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - Feb. 19
RICHMOND, Va. (February 19, 2013)
- The CAA has recognized six men's and women's tennis players for outstanding
performances last week.
James Madison senior Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia) and
the William & Mary tandem of junior John
Banks (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Scott
Huang (Burke, Va.) earned CAA men's tennis honors for the week ending February
17. Receiving honors on the women's side were William & Mary junior Maria Belaya (Melbourne, Fla.) and the
James Madison duo of senior Michelle
Nguyen (Springfield, Va.) and sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich.).
Pool was selected as the CAA
men's tennis Player of the Week after going 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No.
1 doubles as the Dukes defeated CAA foe Hofstra (6-1) and NJIT (5-2). In
singles, he downed Hofstra's Ari Richman 6-2, 6-3 and NJIT's Holger Norregaard,
6-2, 6-4 to improve his dual match record to 4-2 on the season. In doubles,
Pool and partner Robert Stirling topped Hofstra's Richman and Adrien Bailly 8-2
and beat NJIT's Petr Rousar and Erik Artursson, 9-8 (7). They upped their
record to 2-2 in dual matches and 12-3 overall this season.
Banks and Huang were honored as
the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after going 3-0 last weekend. At the No.
3 spot, they posted an 8-4 victory over Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius of 34th-ranked
N.C. State, and edged Liberty's Siim Tuus and Stan Vaughan 8-7 (7) to clinch
the doubles point in the Tribe's 4-2 win over the Flames. At the No. 2 position,
Banks and Huang topped Norfolk State's Samuel Lemberger and Igor Braga 8-5 as
W&M beat the Spartans 6-1.
Belaya was named the CAA women's
tennis Player of the Week after going 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position in the
Tribe's victories over West Virginia (6-1) and 30th-ranked South
Carolina (4-3). The junior defeated WVU's Audrey Woodland 6-4, 6-0 and then
clinched the upset over the Gamecocks by outlasting 59th-ranked
Jaklin Alawi 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Belaya has won three straight matches and is 6-4 in
dual match play.
Nguyen and Pinchoff were honored
as the CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after compiling a 2-0 mark at the
No. 1 spot. The tandem beat Howard's Katelyn Stokes and Talia Johnson 8-3 in
the Dukes' 6-1 victory over the Bison and also topped Navy's Erin Snook and
Noelle Kaufmann 8-3 in a 4-3 setback to the Midshipmen. Nguyen and Pinchoff are
3-0 in dual matches and 11-3 overall this season.
