UNH, ODU and Nova Earn NCAA Championship Berths
RICHMOND,
Va. - Coming out of one of the country's most competitive FCS
conferences perennially, three CAA Football teams in New Hampshire, Old Dominion and
Villanova have earned berths in the NCAA Division I Football Championship.
Old Dominion will make its second-consecutive postseason appearance
after being named the No. 4 overall seed in this year's championship field. The
fourth-ranked Monarchs, who advanced to the Second Round a year ago, will host
the First Round winner of Saturday's Bethune-Cookman/Coastal Carolina matchup
on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. ODU ended the regular season with a 10-1
overall record that included a 7-1 mark in CAA play.
New Hampshire also received one of 10 at-large berths to the
tournament and will also have a First Round bye before heading south to square
off against ninth-ranked Wofford on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Terriers' Gibbs
Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. The 11th-ranked Wildcats wrapped up the regular
season 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the CAA on their way to picking up a postseason
bid for the ninth-straight year, which represents the longest active streak in
the nation.
Villanova will represent CAA Football as the league's
automatic qualifier when it meets Stony Brook on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. at
the Seawolves' LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Wildcats have earned a postseason
bid four times in the last five years, which includes the team's NCAA title run
in 2009 and a semifinal berth a year later. Nova notched a 6-2 mark in the
league play en route to earning an 8-3 overall record this fall.
The full NCAA Championship bracket can be found on NCAA.com.
CAA Football's Championship history is unprecedented when it
comes to placing teams in the postseason field. This year's three selections
extend a streak to 22 straight seasons of multiple bids for the CAA (formerly
Atlantic 10 and Yankee Conference). The league has also now had multiple teams
in the NCAA playoffs in 26 seasons and at least one team in the championship
field 33 straight years.
With the three selections this season, CAA Football now has a total of 83 NCAA
Division I Championship berths and will be looking to add to its already
impressive mark of 25 postseason wins and two national championships in the
last four years.
