Northeastern Wins CAA MSOC Championship
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 11, 2012) - Senior Don Anding's
goal from 20 yards out with 4:39 remaining in the second overtime gave
second-seeded Northeastern a 1-0 victory
over #4 Hofstra in the CAA Men's Soccer Championship game on Sunday afternoon
at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.
The CAA championship was the first for Northeastern (13-2-4)
and earned the Huskies an automatic berth to the NCAA Men's Soccer
Championship. NU had previously reached the CAA title game in 2008 and 2009,
but came up on the short end of 1-0 decisions both times. Hofstra, which
advanced on penalty kicks in the first two rounds of the tournament, saw its
season end with an 11-6-4 mark.
On the game-winning play, junior Dante Marini touched the
ball over to Anding. The CAA Player of the Year took a couple of dribbles to
create space and then fired a 20-yard left-footed laser that hooked into the
right side of the net. It was the league-leading 14th goal of the
season for Anding, who was honored as the Most Outstanding Performer of the
championship.
Northeastern out-shot Hofstra 11-2 and controlled play for
the majority of the first half. Pride senior goalkeeper Adam Janowski, who made
a career-high 10 saves against top-seeded Drexel in the semifinals, stopped six
shots in the first 45 minutes against the Huskies. His best save of the period
came in the ninth minute when Anding intercepted a failed clear and had a
one-on-one opportunity from 15 yards out, but Janowski was able to smother the
left-footed attempt.
The second half was evenly played with NU having a narrow
6-5 edge in shots. The Huskies nearly broke through early in the second half.
Anding outraced a Pride defender to a long pass and had a one-on-one attempt
from just inside the box, but Janowski charged out and made a sliding stop.
Hofstra's best scoring attempt came with just over 31
minutes to go in regulation. Junior Herbert Biste controlled a rebound off a
free kick and sent an 18-yard shot sailing just over the crossbar. The Pride's
Joseph Holland also had a 20-yard free kick sail high with 12:31 remaining.
NU had a good opportunity in the final minute of the first
overtime. Marini dribbled through traffic into the middle of the box but saw
his 15-yard shot miss high.
Northeastern finished with a 20-7 shot advantage, with eight
of them coming from Anding. Huskies' goalkeeper Oliver Blum made one save to
record the shutout. Janowski finished with seven saves for the Pride.
