Northeastern's Anding Receives Top Honor on 2012 All-CAA Men's Soccer Team
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 8, 2012) -
Northeastern senior forward Don Anding was selected as the 2012 CAA men's
soccer Player of the Year in voting by the league's head coaches. The award was
presented Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Men's Soccer
Championship in Philadelphia, Pa.
Also receiving top men's soccer honors
from the conference were Northeastern sophomore defender Simon Cox and Hofstra
junior defender Shaun Foster, who were chosen as the CAA Co-Defensive
Players of the Year. Hofstra freshman midfielder Joseph Holland was
named the CAA Rookie of the Year. Northeastern's Brian Ainscough and Drexel's Doug Hess were
voted as the CAA Co-Coaches of the Year.
Anding is the first Northeastern player
to receive CAA Player of the Year accolades. The senior led the conference with
28 points and ranked second in the league in goals (11), assists (6) and
game-winning goals (5). He contributed either a goal or an assist in 12 of the Huskies'
17 contests, including his first career hat trick with three goals in a 5-2
victory over Holy Cross on Sept. 25. Anding, who was the CAA Rookie of the Year
in 2009, is the first NU player since 2001 to score 10 or more goals in a
season and the first since 2007 to record more than 20 points in a season. He
currently ranks third in career goals (22) at NU and is tied for fifth in
career points (55).
Cox is Northeastern's first CAA
Defensive Player of the Year honoree. The sophomore back anchored a Huskies'
defense that surrendered just 15 goals in 17 matches and recorded seven
shutouts. Cox also contributed on the offensive end by finishing in a tie for
second on the team with four goals, all which came in CAA play.
Foster is the first three-time winner
of the CAA Defensive Player of the Year award. The junior back was the leader
of a Hofstra defense that allowed only 21 goals in 19 contests and posted seven
shutouts, including four in CAA play. Offensively, Foster contributed two goals
and an assist. Both goals were game-winners.
Holland was Hofstra's second-leading
scorer with six goals and ranked third on the team with 14 points. The freshman
midfielder, who made 17 starts, contributed goals in the Pride's conference
road victories at George Mason and Delaware. He's the second Hofstra player to
be chosen as Rookie of the Year, joining Foster in 2010.
Ainscough, who earned CAA Coach of the
Year honors for the first time, guided Northeastern to an 11-2-4 overall record
and a second-place finish in CAA with a 6-1-3 mark. The Huskies received the
first national ranking in program history this season and are currently ranked
#27 by College Soccer News. NU had a 12-match unbeaten streak (8-0-4) from
Sept. 15 to Oct. 27 and also was unbeaten at home (7-0-1) for the second year
in a row.
Hess led Drexel to a 12-2-3 overall
record and its first outright CAA regular-season title with an 8-1-1 mark. The
Dragons are currently riding a seven-match unbeaten streak (6-0-1), with five
of those victories coming by shutout. Drexel's 12 wins are just one shy of the
program record of 13 set in 1990 and 1998. The CAA Coach of the Year honor is
the first for Hess and just the second earned by a Drexel coach.
Northeastern had a league-high three
selections on the All-CAA first team as Anding and Cox were joined by senior
goalkeeper Oliver Blum (0.64 GAA, 51
svs., 5 ShO). James Madison was represented by senior midfielder Paul Wyatt (9g, 3a) and freshman
defender Bjarki Aðalsteinsson (1g, 1a), while Old Dominion had junior forward Tim Hopkinson (10g, 5a) and senior
midfielder Chris Harmon (9g, 6a).
Rounding out the first team were Hofstra's
Foster, Towson junior forward Olakunle
Banjo (4g, 4a), George Mason senior forward Taylor Morgan (CAA-best 13 goals), UNCW sophomore midfielder Jamie Dell (4g, 4a) and Drexel junior
midfielder Nathan Page (9g, 1a).
