James Madison Reaches CAA Field Hockey Semifinals on Overtime Goal
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 2, 2012) - Third-seeded James
Madison scored the game-winning goal two minutes into overtime to give the
Dukes a 3-2 victory over sixth-seeded Hofstra in the 2012 CAA Field Hockey
Championship quarterfinals. JMU will face second-seeded Northeastern in the
semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Junior defender Amy Goldstein registered the game-winning
goal for JMU (11-7, 4-3 CAA) while redshirt-freshman midfielder Loes Stijntjes
scored the tying-goal with 27 seconds to play in regulation. For Hofstra (7-12,
1-6 CAA), sophomore forward Jonel Boileu led the way with one goal on seven shots.
Hofstra registered the first goal of the game in the 51st
minute when Boileau tipped in a long shot attempt from Codi Nyland, who picked
up the assist. JMU quickly attempted to pick up the equalizer 30 seconds later
from a shot from Taylor West, but Hofstra's junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn De Turo
made the diving save to preserve the lead.
The Dukes were able to break into the scoring column in the
62nd minute with a goal from redshirt-junior forward Rachel Wein.
Wein picked up a pass from midfield, cut through the Pride defense, and fired a
shot into the right side of the cage to tie the score at 1-1.
However, Hofstra was able to rebound quickly and took the
lead right back one minute later when Micaela Gallagher tapped in the rebound
of a Boileau shot to give the Pride a 2-1 advantage with seven minutes
remaining.
JMU forced the game into overtime with Stijntjes' goal off a
penalty corner with 27 seconds to play in regulation. Stijntjes received the pass from Dana
Allaband and shot the ball through the Pride defense into the lower right
corner of the goal.
In overtime, the Dukes registered the game-winning goal in
the 72nd minute. Goldstein collected the ball just inside midfield
and cut into the Hofstra defense and shot the ball past De Turo into the top
corner of the goal.
