UNCW, Delaware's Greg Matthias Compete at NCAA Golf Championships

Led by Payne McLeod and Ryan Nagy, both at one-under, UNCW finished the opening round of the Athens Regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships tied with Houston for fifth-place at two-under-par at the 7,253-yard, par-71 course at the University of Georgia on Thursday. Delaware's Greg Matthias opened play in the Ann Arbor Regional as an individual.

Fourth-ranked Alabama leads the regional field after carding a 15-under-par in the opening round. Tenth-ranked North Florida is second, just two strokes behind the Crimson Tide.

UNF's Kevin Aylwin holds the medalist lead with a six-under-par 65 in the opening round.

McLeod and Nagy are tied for 17th overall while Thomas Bass and Patrick Sawrey are tied for 26th, both finished with a one-under-par 71.

Rounding out the Seahawks lineup was Stefan Brewer with an opening round 80.

Competing as an individual, Matthias fired a seven-over-par 78 on Thursday during his opening round at the NCAA Men's Golf Ann Arbor Regional and is tied for 60th place following the first round of the three-day tournament.

Matthias carded a 42-36-78 on the par-71, 6,723-yard University of Michigan Golf Course during his first ever NCAA appearance.

Julien Brun of TCU, Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor, and Anthony Paolucci of USC are each tied for the individual lead as all three players fired a four-under-par 67 during their opening round.

Matthias, the 11th Blue Hen golfer in UD history to compete in the NCAA Tournament, will begin his second round on Friday at 9:50 a.m. on the 10th tee.
