James Madison Earns First Ever CAA Women's Track & Field Title
FAIRFAX, Va. (May 5, 2012) - James Madison's women's track
and field squad earned its first ever CAA championship at the Virginia 529 CAA Track
and Field Championships on Saturday at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va.
The Dukes finished with 132 points, narrowly defeating VCU
with 126.5 points. Georgia State finished third with 122 points, followed by
George Mason (98.5), Delaware (96), UNCW (68), Towson (60.5), William &
Mary (57.5) and Northeastern (57).
VCU's Jaleesa Williams shared Co-Field Most Outstanding
Performer honors with George Mason's Mandissa Marshall. Georgia State's Tamara
Moore claimed Most Outstanding Track Performer of the meet.
JMU's Katie Harman took the 1,500 meter title in 4:30.70,
while teammate Danyelle Kent-Robinson earned the high jump crown with a leap of
1.70m. Jordan Simmons paced the field in the 100 meters in 11.76 and Annie
Reiner capped off an impressive day for the Dukes with a win in the 800 meters
in a time of 2:10.02.
Georgia State's Moore set a new meet record in the 100 meter
hurdles in 13.58, winning the title for the second consecutive year. She also
came back to take the 400 meter hurdles crown in 1:00.12.
Denger repeated as heptathlon champion for George Mason,
with a score of 4697 over two days.
VCU's Williams took the shot put title with a mark of 14.58m
and posted the second best CAA meet throw ever in discus at 49.01m.
Other winners on the women's side were Georgia State's
Angelia Nugent, who defended the triple jump with a mark of 12.54m. Panthers'
teammate Katharine Showalter won the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:49.58. Delaware's
Victoria Caruso earned the 200 meter in 24.01. VCU's Kiara Porter paced the
field in the 400 meter in 53.24.
VCU 4x100 meter relay team earned the crown in 45.20, with
George Mason capping off the event winning the 4x400 meter relay in 3:39.55.
