CAA Track & Field Championships Day One
FAIRFAX, Va. (May 4, 2012) - A pair of CAA records fell on day
one of the Virginia 529 CAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships on
Friday at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va.
Two-time defending champion George Mason is on top after the
first day of the men's competition with 71 points, while William & Mary is
close behind with 62 points. UNCW is in third place with 41.5 points, followed
by Northeastern (36.5 points), VCU (13 points) and Georgia State (4 points).
After Day 1 of the women's team competition, James Madison
is in first place with 45 points, followed by Towson with 29 points. William
& Mary sits in third place with 26.50, while Northeastern is fourth with 26
points. Georgia State is fifth (25 points), followed by George Mason (24.5),
VCU (22), Delaware (19) and UNCW rounded out the action with (17 points).
Highlighting Friday's action was a record-setting
performance in the javelin by William & Mary senior Brandon Heroux, who
turned in a throw of 71.34m to break his own previous CAA mark of 69.37m set in
2011. The CAA title in the javelin was the fourth straight for Heroux, who became
the first man in CAA history to win four consecutive javelin titles.
George Mason senior Lavell Handy repeated as long jump
champion, with a leap of 7.85m, the best jump since 2001 at the CAA
championship. Patriots' teammate, junior Patrick Dietrick took the pole vault
with a height of 4.80m.
Northeastern sophomore Max Milder narrowly missed a new CAA
record in the hammer throw, posting the second best mark ever at 59.15m.
The nightcap was dominated by William and Mary, as senior Alex
McGrath took the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:24.92 and sophomore Josh
Mercado-Reigh claimed the 10,000 meters in 30:50.25.
On the women's side, George Mason junior Mandissa Marshall
set a new meet record in the pole vault with a height of 4.15m, breaking the
previous mark of 4.0m set by Nicole Kazuba in 2009. Mason teammate, freshman Kelsey
Reese, paced the javelin with a throw of 44.22m. James Madison's Marissa McDonald claimed top
honors in the long jump with a leap of 6.03m.
Northeastern junior Julia Westover became the third straight
Husky to win the hammer throw with a toss of 54.27m.
JMU junior Katie Harman began the night portion, taking the
5,000 meters with a time of 17:22.32, while William & Mary sophomore
Elaina Balouris capped off day one earning the 10,000 meter title in 35:57.92.
The Virginia 529 CAA Men's and Women's Track and Field
Championships continue at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the decathlon. Field events
get underway at 10 a.m. and the track finals begin at 12:45 p.m.
