CAA Tennis 1st Round
WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
NORFOLK, Va. (April 19, 2012) -
Sixth-seeded James Madison, #7 Delaware and #8 Drexel posted victories in the
first round of the Virginia 529 CAA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at
Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
JMU defeated #11 George Mason, 4-0,
Delaware downed #10 Hofstra, 4-0, and Drexel edged #9 Towson, 4-3.
The opening match of the day between Drexel
and Towson was moved indoors due to wet courts, but provided a great deal of
excitement. The two teams split the six singles matches. Drexel got victories
at the top two spots as No. 1 Sonja Stosic defeated Aandria Carr, 6-1, 6-2, and
No. 2 Zeynep Mafa topped Nani Lizana, 6-0, 6-2, and also got a win at No. 6 as
the Dragons' Nicole Pivonka beat Ariel Burke, 6-3, 6-2. The Tigers responded
with three wins from the middle of its lineup. No. 4 Ayana Dow was a 6-4, 6-4
victor over Emma Brook, No. 5 Andrea Sumlin knocked off Alex Bell, 6-2, 6-2 and
No. 3 Nisha Shah outlasted Marcela Rosales, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
In the doubles competition, Drexel's Mafa
and Stosic rolled past Dow and Burke at No. 1, but Towson's Samlin and Lizana
responded with an 8-4 victory over Rosales and Elise Leizerovich at No. 2. The
match was decided at No. 3 doubles where Drexel's Pivonka and Brook got past
Shah and Carr, 8-4.
Delaware jumped out to a 1-0 lead on
Hofstra by winning the double competition. The Blue Hens' top team of Samantha
Carnall and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom beat Elena Ivanova and Brooke Sailer, 8-4,
and the No. 3 tandem of Olivia Heim and Kim Milla took an 8-3 decision over the
Pride's Paige Polizos and Malissa Gilanchi. Delaware capped the match with a
sweep in singles. Courtney Fenimore was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Gilanchi at No.
3, Sjoberg-Sundstrom rolled past Bianca Derrick, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 and Dorothy
Safron picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sonia Tsay at No. 2.
In the final match, JMU earned the doubles
point with a pair of 8-1 victories as the Dukes' top team of Kinsey Pate and
Taylor Pinchoff defeated Ashley Delaney and Brooke Blackwell and the No. 2 duo
of Michelle Nguyen and Katherine Bulling beat Liza Davis and Sara Novakovic.
JMU wrapped up the match with victories from the bottom three singles spots.
Pinchoff downed Victoria Zalewski, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4, Megan Douglass topped
Kate Desiatnikova, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 and Bulling beat Andrea Londen, 6-1, 6-0,
at No. 6.
In Friday's quarterfinals, #3 Georgia State
faces #6 James Madison at 8:30 a.m., #2 UNCW meets #7 Delaware at 11 a.m., #1
VCU takes on #8 Drexel at 1:30 p.m. and #4 William & Mary challenges #5 Old
Dominion at 4 p.m.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
NORFOLK, Va. (April 19, 2012) -
Seventh-seeded George Mason and 8th-seeded Delaware recorded
victories in the first round of the Virginia 529 CAA Men's Tennis Championship
on Thursday at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion
University.
Mason battled past #10 Hofstra, 4-2, for
its first victory in the CAA championship since 1998. The Patriots took an
early 1-0 lead with a dominating effort in doubles. The No. 2 tandem of Scott
Keaton and Joe Wiggins earned an 8-3 win over Matt Gemmell and Antonio Pena and
Mason's No. 3 team of Jimmy Davis and Taylor Sargent rolled to an 8-1 victory
over Jason Sinkoff and Ryhann Gill.
The Pride battled back with a pair of
victories in singles. Mason's Davis beat Ari Richman, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2
slot and the Patriots' Wiggins topped Sinkoff 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6, but Hofstra
got a 6-3, 6-4 win from Adrien Bailly over Keaton at No. 4 and a 6-4, 6-2
victory from Pena over Jordan Dyke at No. 1. Mason was able to close out the
match at the No. 3 position as Jorge Osuna beat Gemmell, 6-3, 6-4.
In the opening match of the day which was
played indoors due to wet courts, Delaware downed #9 Drexel, 4-1. The Blue Hens
won all four of their singles matches in straight sets. UD's Adam Lawton posted
a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jeganathan
Srinivasan at No. 2 and Jason Derene beat Paul Stauskus, 7-6 (1), 6-1 at No. 6.
Also picking up wins for the Blue Hens were top-seeded Troy Beneck over Badr
Ouabdelmoumen, 6-4, 7-6 (4), and No. 3 Andre Vorobyov over Skyler Davis, 6-4,
7-5, at No. 3. Drexel earned its point when No. 4 Bryan Nguyen got past Nolan
Gelman, 6-4, 7-5. Doubles were not played in the match.
