CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - March 13
RICHMOND, Va. (March 13, 2012) -
The CAA has recognized six men's and women's tennis players for outstanding
performances last week.
UNCW junior Kosta Blank (Kfar Sava, Israel) and the VCU duo of sophomore Antoine Baroz (Geneva, Switzerland) and
sophomore Alexis Heugas (Jurancon,
France) earned CAA men's tennis honors for the week ending March 11. Receiving
honors on the women's side were William & Mary sophomore Maria Belaya (Melbourne, Fla.) and the
UNCW tandem of sophomores Angie Sekely
(Mississauga, Ontario) and Kelly Cameron
(Hilton Head Island, S.C.).
Blank was selected as the CAA
men's tennis Player of the Week after posting a 3-0 singles record in three
Seahawks' victories. The junior helped #43 UNCW upset #21 N.C. State, 4-3, by
rallying for a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5) triumph over the Wolfpack's Jullian
Sullivan. Blank also defeated Temple's Dmitry Vizhunov, 6-0, 6-1, in a 6-0
triumph over the Owls and topped Binghamton's Robin Lesage, 6-1, 6-0, as UNCW
edged the Bearcats, 4-3. Blank owns a 9-2 singles record for the season at the
No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
Baroz and Heugas were honored as
the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after earning a pair of wins at the No.
1 doubles spot as VCU posted 6-1 victories over Temple and South Florida. The
duo edged Temple's Filip Rams and Kacper Rams, 8-6, and downed USF's Yannick
Yoshizawa and Oliver Pramming, 8-4.
Belaya was named the CAA women's
tennis Player of the Week after going 2-1 at the No. 1 singles position in
matches against three nationally ranked opponents. She dropped her first match
to #114 Nazarai Urbina of 15th-ranked Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-4, but
then rebounded to knock off #30 Aeriel Ellis of 9th-ranked Texas,
6-7 (2), 6-3, 10-5. It was the highest ranked win for a Tribe singles player
since 2008. Belaya capped her week by beating Wisconsin's Nicky Stracar, 6-0,
6-3, in W&M's 4-3 win over the 72nd-ranked Badgers. Belaya has
won five of her last six matches.
Sekely and Cameron were honored
as the CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after defeating Temple's Yana
Mavrina and Paola Calderon, 8-2, at the No. 1 doubles position in the Seahawks'
4-1 victory over the Owls. The duo improved their record to 4-3 on the season.
