Tennis Weekly Awards - March 7
RICHMOND, Va. (March 7, 2012) -
The CAA has recognized six men's and women's tennis players for outstanding
performances last week.
Georgia State sophomore Thomas Cook (Lilburn, Ga.) and the William
& Mary duo of sophomore Ben Hoogland
(Glenview, Ill.) and junior Adrian
Vodislav (Bucharest, Romania) earned CAA men's tennis honors for the week
ending March 4. Receiving honors on the women's side were Georgia State sophomore
Abigail Tere-Apisah (Port Moresby,
Papua New Guinea) and the VCU tandem of seniors Alex Bara (Oradea, Romania) and Ana Bara (Oradea, Romania).
Cook was selected as the CAA
men's tennis Player of the Week after posting a 4-0 singles record in four GSU
victories last week. Playing at No. 2 singles, the sophomore clinched a 4-3
triumph over South Carolina State by fighting off three match points and edging
Dmytro Kovalevych, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11). He also defeated Gardner-Webb's Adam
Knutsson-Sundblad, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6), UNC Asheville's Jonas Brobeck,
6-1, 6-2, and Georgia Southwestern's Yvan Ruelle, 6-0, 6-1.
Hoogland and Vodislav were
honored as the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after advancing to the third
round of the Pacific Coast Doubles Classic in La Jolla, Calif. The duo downed
Claremont-Mudd-Scripp's Victor Chien and Alex Johnson, 6-3, 6-0 in the first
round and then upset 9th-seeded Kelly Donaldson and Thomas O'Brien
of Villanova, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. They were eliminated by 7th-seeded
Nicolas Meister and Adrien Puget of UCLA, 6-1, 6-3.
Tere-Apisah was named the CAA women's
tennis Player of the Week after picking up her third victory over a ranked
opponent this season. The sophomore downed #42 Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State,
6-3, 6-4, in the Panthers' narrow 4-3 loss to the Bulldogs. She also defeated
Natalia Lozano of UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot in GSU's
6-1 victory. Tere-Apisah improved her record to 9-0 this season.
Alex and Ana Bara were honored
as the CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after splitting a pair of tough
matches at the No. 1 doubles spot against ACC competition. The duo clinched the
doubles point in the Rams' 4-3 triumph over Wake Forest by beating the Demon
Deacons' Kayla Duncan and Rebecca Siegler, 8-5. Bara and Bara, who are ranked
#42 nationally, came up just short against #3 Duke's top tandem of Beatrice
Capra and Rachel Kahan, falling 9-8 (7-5). The Rams were beaten 7-0 by the Blue
Devils.
