JMU'S Harman Selected As CAA Women's Cross Country Athlete Of The Year
RICHMOND, Va. (December 8, 2011) - James Madison junior Katie
Harman (Clarksville, Md.), who earned all-region and all-conference honors
in 2011, was chosen as the CAA women's cross country Athlete of the Year in
voting by the league's head coaches.
William and Mary freshman Jess Cygan (Bethlehem, Pa.)
and Georgia State freshman Hannah Stefanoff (Grandview Heights, Ohio) were
selected as the CAA women's cross country Co-Rookies of the Year and JMU head
coach Dave Rinker was named CAA Coach of the Year for the second
consecutive season.
Harman was recognized as the Most Outstanding Performer at
the CAA Women's Cross Country Championship after claiming the individual title
with a time of 21:18 on the 6K course. She won the race by 25 seconds and broke
the previous course record by 65 seconds as the Dukes took home the team
championship. Harman earned USTFCCCA All-Southeast Region honors after
finishing 18th at the NCAA Southeast Regional with a time of 20:51.
She also was the individual winner at the ECAC Championship Division Race with
a time of 17:29 in the 5K event. Harman is the fourth different JMU runner to
receive Athlete of the Year honors over the past seven seasons.
Cygan earned all-conference honors after finishing fourth at
the CAA Cross Country Championship with a time of 22:21 over the 6K course. She
was the top-placing freshman in the event and helped W&M garner a
second-place team finish. Cygan was 111th overall at the NCAA
Southeast Regional with a 6K time of 22:31 and finished 117th
overall in a field of more than 350 runners at the Paul Short Invitational. She
also had a second-place finish this season at the William and Mary
Invitational.
Stefanoff also received all-conference honors after placing
ninth at the CAA Cross Country Championship with a time of 22:50 in the 6K
event. She led the Panthers to a third-place team finish. Stefanoff won
three individual titles this season, placing first at the Georgia State
Invitational, the Troy University "Coach O" Invitational and the Augusta State
Jaguar Invitational, where she set the course record. Stefanoff, who was GSU's
top finisher in every event this season, finished 48th out of 191
runners at the NCAA South Regional with a time of 22:00.8 on the 6K course.
Rinker was selected as the CAA women's cross country Coach
of the Year for the second consecutive season and the seventh time in his
career after guiding JMU to back-to-back conference titles. The Dukes also
placed eighth at the NCAA Southeast Regional and finished fourth at the ECAC
Championship.
The conference also recognized its 2011 All-CAA women's
cross country team, which is made up of the top 12 finishers from the CAA
Championship.
