TRIO RECEIVE CAA MEN?S GOLFER OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES ? OCT. 19
RICHMOND, Va. (October 19, 2011) - Georgia
State's Tyler Gruca, James Madison's Chris Wellde and UNCW's Thomas Bass all
earned CAA Men's Golfer of the Week honors after their strong play last week.
Wellde won medalist honors after a
playoff at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate to help James Madison to a first
place team finish. The senior birdied
the 18th hole in the final round to finish at 1-over 73 on the day
and even-par 144 for the tournament (71-73) finishing in a four-way tie for the
top spot. It was Wellde's first
individual tournament victory, second career top-give, as well as his
second-best 18-and 36-hole scores of his career. The event was played on the
Fiddler's Elbow Country Club's par 72, 7,014-yard River Course.
Bass posted his second top-10 finish of
the fall with a tie for sixth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The
junior shot 74-72-72-218 (+2) at the par 72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough,
Tenn. Bass topped five national-ranked players, including three in the
top-10. The Seahawks finished 8th
out of 15 teams.
Gruca earned a career-best tie for
seventh place at the inaugural AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic hosted by
Georgia State. The sophomore carded 72-72-71-215 (-1) at the Berkley Hills
Country Club (72 par, 6,694-yards). The Panthers finished tied for 5th as Gruca
led GSU to its best round of the season in the second round (288). Gruca has
posted back-to-back top 15 finishes in the Panthers last two tournaments.
