ODU'S MORRELL, UR'S MARTIN NAMED CAA WOMEN'S GOLFERS OF THE WEEK - OCT. 12
RICHMOND, Va. (October 12, 2011) - Old
Dominion's Samantha Morrell and Richmond's Tracy Martin earned CAA Women's
Golfer of the Week honors after their stellar outings last week.
Morrell fired 71-70-71-212 (-4) and
earned medalist honors at the East Carolina Lady Pirate Intercollegiate. The junior won the event by one stroke over
Laverry Kumar (UNCW), Ammy Otteson (ECU), Juliet Vongphaumy (Maryland) and
Laura Wearn (Furman), who finished tied for second at 213. Morrell led the
tournament in par five scoring at 4.33, tied second in par four scoring at 4.07
and tied for fourth in birdies with 12 at the par 72, 5,980-yard Greenville
Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
Martin set a new school record for low
36-hole score (141, -3) and low 54-hole score (215, -1), while tying the UR
school record for low 18-hole score (69, -3). The junior was edged in a playoff
at the Spider Invitational at the par 72, 6,105-yard Independence Golf Course
in Midlothian, Va. Martin paced the Spiders, who finished T-2nd in
the nine-team field. The junior was the Day 1 leader after rounds of 69 (-3)
and 72 (E) and she finished the tournament carding 74 (+2) to force a playoff
with Brown's Stephanie Hsieh. On the first playoff hole, Hsieh drained her
birdie putt for the win after Martin's birdied bid came up inches short. The
runner-up was the best career finish for Martin. The previous Richmond 36-hole
and 54-hole records were set by Natasha Moreira in 2005-06 with 145 (+1) and
218 (+2).
