NICHOLSON, SCHIEDEL AND VARELA SELECTED CAA CO-WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK; CLEMENTE COLLECTS ROOKIE ACCOLADES - JAN. 18
LAWRENCEVILLE,
N.J. (Jan. 18, 2011) - Old Dominion's James Nicholson, Binghamton's Nate
Schiedel and Hofstra's Vince Varela have been selected as CAA Co-Wrestlers of the Week
for all competition Jan. 11-17. Hofstra's Zach Clemente has earned Rookie of
the Week honors.
Nicholson,
a senior 125 from Des Moines, Iowa, won all four of his matches at the CAA
Duals on Saturday, winning three by fall. His only bout reaching the third
period was a 9-3 decision over the nation's 16th-ranked wrestler from Hofstra. Nicholson,
currently ranked fourth nationally, remains unbeaten at 21-0 on the season.
Schiedel, a
sophomore 184 from Caledonia, N.Y., captured all three of his matches at the
CAA Duals. Two of his wins came by fall, including a pin in just 18 seconds and
another when he moved up two weight classes. With his three wins last weekend,
10th-ranked Schiedel improves to 22-4 overall in 2010-11.
Varela, a junior
141 from Rio Rancho, N.M., swept his four matches at the CAA Duals. These
included a decision over the league's top-ranked 141 from Binghamton, a
decision over the CAA's fourth-ranked wrestler from ODU, a major decision and a
fall. Varela is now 14-8 on the year.
Clemente, a
freshman 157 from Troy, N.Y., triumphed in all three of his matches at last
week's CAA duals. He earned a 46 second fall and a decision over the league's
sixth-ranked 157 from Boston University. Clemente has now collected 10 collegiate
victories.
