PANTHERS' WOMEN'S GOLF LENDS A HELPING HAND
ATLANTA (Dec. 13, 2010) - Since wrapping up its fall schedule in October,
the Georgia State women's golf team has stayed busy in and around the
community.
The team members donated their time at four separate
philanthropic events: a golf fundraiser benefitting the Larry
Nelson-Joe Inman Foundation, Open Hands, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Atlanta
and the Hammond Park Neighborhood Cleanup.
The ladies of Georgia State golf pitched in to help one
of their own at the golf fundraiser as the proceeds went towards the Panthers'
men's golf head coach, Joe Inman's fundraiser. After helping out around the
course, the women's golf team members were given the opportunity to meet some
of the professional players on the links such as Larry Nelson, Lee Trevino and
Billy Andrade.
"The team has been great with community service and I
think it has been a real eye-opener for the players on our team," said head
coach Cathy Mant. "I don't know how much of that may be done in their
countries. In the beginning a couple of them were asking why, but they have all
done a magnificent job with it. I hope they will go away knowing that they are
helping people who really are in need and hopefully it will continue to carry
on in the future."
Other service tasks of the team included contributing in
the preparation of almost 2,000 meals with Open Hands Atlanta, helping children
at the Boys and Girls Club with their schoolwork and picking up trash and
racking leaves in Hammond Park near the campus.
This community service volunteerism is part of GSU
athletics' goal of 4,000 combined service hours during the 2010-11 school year.
The Georgia State women's golf team will
kick-off its spring schedule Feb. 13-15 as the Panthers travel south to
Orlando, Fla., to compete in the UCF Challenge.
