GSU TEAMS UNITE IN COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP PROJECT
ATLANTA (Nov. 13, 2010) - An energetic group of 15 Georgia State
student-athletes and a couple coaches spent a Saturday in November helping to
clean up and spruce up the Hammond Park neighborhood near the GSU campus.
Members of the women's tennis team, the women's golf
team, the women's soccer team, the softball team and the baseball team united
to work together on this service project.
Softball's Whitney Phillips explained: "We met early
in the morning at a nearby church. We split up into small groups and were given
different areas and streets as our projects. We picked up trash and stuffed
into the bags, we pulled weeds, we raked leaves, we shoveled and we swept. It
was hard work, but we tried to make it fun by getting to know each other and
speak to residents as they came by. Everybody was tired and worn out by the end
of the day, but we knew we had accomplished something and were proud the work
was done right. The free pizza at the end helped get us our energy back as we
told stories of our day's work to one another."
Georgia State's student-athletes have a combined goal of
serving 4,000 total hours of community service this year, which averages out to
about 15 hours per student-athlete.
