RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 2, 2010) – Six players with CAA ties were selected to the 2010-11 United States Women’s Lacrosse National Team on Sunday. James Madison’s Amy Altig, Casey Ancarrow, Kelly Berger and Kimberly Griffin and Hofstra’s Corrine Gandolfi and Kathleen Hertsch were chosen to the 36-member team.

Ancarrow earned Rookie of the Year honors in the CAA and state of Virginia in 2010. The redshirt sophomore attacker was among the Dukes’ top offensive performers with 31 goals and 22 assists. She was named to the All-CAA second team.

Griffin, a consensus All-America pick last spring, led the Dukes with 61 points, 39 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers in 2010. A four-year starting midfielder, Griffin was a two-time All-CAA first team selection and earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie team as a freshman. Her accomplishments led her to be named as one of 25 nominees for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top player.

Berger, a 2008 JMU graduate and current head women’s lacrosse coach at UMBC, was a four-year starting midfielder and two-time All-America selection for the Dukes. The Columbia, Md., native finished her career ranked second in program history in goals (184), points (262) and assists (78). Berger was chosen as the CAA Player of the Year in 2006 and was a three-time All-CAA first team member. She was among 17 nominees for the 2007 Tewaaraton Trophy.

Altig, currently serving as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Princeton, was a two-time All-CAA goalkeeper and ranked in the top 20 in Division I in both save percentage and goals against average as a senior at JMU. Altig was selected as an alternate on the 2009 U.S. World Cup Team and has been a member of numerous U.S. Elite and Development Teams. She was also chosen as a member of the U.S. Touring Team that competed in the Prague Cup in the Czech Republic during the summer of 2008.

This marks the second straight year Hofstra’s Gandolfi has been named to the national team after her time as a member of the 2009-10 United States Development Team. Gandolfi is only the fourth player in Pride history to earn All-American honors twice in their career, as she was a third team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) selection in both 2009 and 2010. The Smithtown, N.Y., product was a first team IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region and All-CAA performer in 2010 and led her squad in every statistical category as a midfielder this past season, including 49 goals, 22 assists, 71 points, 41 ground balls, 61 draw controls and 30 caused turnovers. She left her mark throughout the Hofstra record books as her 148 career goals ranks third all-time, while her 61 assists is fourth and her 209 points is third all-time. Gandolfi is just the fourth player in program history to record 200 career points.

Hertsch, a first-time national team member, was also tabbed an IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region and All-CAA first team selection in 2010 and was Hofstra’s top defender over the course of the season. She was second on the team in ground balls and caused turnovers with 34 and 18, respectively, while also adding 31 draw controls. Hertsch currently has 105 career ground balls, 48 caused turnovers and 82 draw controls. She ranks in the top-10 all-time in all three categories and will look to become only the fifth player in program history to record at least 100 ground balls and draw controls in their careers when she returns for her senior season in 2011.

The team is set to compete for the first time on Columbus Day at the annual US Lacrosse Stars and Stripes event in Boston.
