CAA FOOTBALL SPRING RECAP - APRIL 10
RICHMOND'S SPRING GAME RECAP
RICHMOND, Va. - Rising senior DT Martin Parker, who was a
Buchanan Award finalist last season, was in on four sacks as the Richmond
Defense controlled the Spiders' annual Spring Game Saturday afternoon at UR
Stadium. Using a modified scoring system, the Defense rolled to a 54-23 victory
in the first Spring Game for first-year head coach Latrell Scott.
Rising senior TB Tyler Kirchoff led the way offensively with
32 yards rushing, 30 yards receiving and the game's lone offensive
touchdown. Sophomore-to-be QB John Laub
was nine-for-16 passing with 92 yards, while rising junior Aaron Corp was
six-for-18 for 44 yards.
Laub, who won a pre-game coin-toss to determine the game's
starting QB, marched the White Team downfield on the game's opening day. He completed a 23-yard strike - the game's
longest play from scrimmage -- down the sidelines to Kirchoff, who later
finished off the nine-play, 65-yards drive with a two-yard TD plunge.
But led by Parker, it was all Blue Team after. The senior finished with six tackles and a
game-high four sacks for 22 lost yards.
Linebacker Cole Gonet, who redshirted as a freshman last season, and
rising sophomore S Doug Howell each made a game-high eight tackles.
Rising redshirt freshmen DL Brandon Scott and Kerry Wynn,
rising junior DL Chris Shields and senior-to-be DL Casey Cooley were each in on
the Blue Team's four other sacks.
Saturday's lone turnover was an interception by rising sophomore DB
Tremayne Graham.
The undermanned Spiders lost 15 starters and 39
letterwinners from last year's team that finished 11-2 and captured the CAA
Football Championship.
The offense got points for touchdowns, field goals
(sophomore Wil Kamin was one-of-two, making a 30-yarder and missing from 39)
and first downs. The defense was
credited points for takeaways, three-and-outs, sacks, tackles for loss, etc.
Saturday's festivities in front of a crowd of 2,276 at UR
Stadium, which marked the final Spider event at the historic venue, also
featured a pregame ceremony in which Martin Parker, C Drew Lachenmayer and LB
Eric McBride were announced as the 2010 senior captains. At halftime, the 2009
senior class was presented their CAA Championship rings from last season.
Construction is in the final stages of the Spiders' $25
million Robins Stadium, which brings Richmond Football back on campus in 2010
for the first time in more than eight decades.
Richmond opens its 2010 campaign at Virginia on Sept. 4,
with the inaugural Robins Stadium opener set for Sept. 18 versus Elon. Football season tickets go on sale June
