HOT SHOOTING LEADS TOWSON PAST SEAHAWKS, 91-74
RICHMOND,
Va., March 5, 2010 - Five Towson players scored in double figures as the
eighth-seeded Tigers rolled to a convincing 91-74 victory over ninth-seeded UNC
Wilmington in the opening round of the 2010 Virginia 529 College Savings Plan
CAA Men's Basketball Championship on Friday afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum.
Sophomore
RaShawn Polk (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way with a game-high 20 points on
8-of-17 field goal shooting and sophomore Troy Franklin (Baltimore, Md.)
drained 4-of-5 from three-point range and finished with 18 points.
Freshman
Isaiah Philmore (Fallston, Md.) chipped in 14 points, while seniors Josh
Thornton (Rochester, N.Y.) and Calvin Lee (Ettrick, Va.) scored 13 and 12,
respectively.
The
Tigers (10-20) led 23-12 with 11:23 left in the opening stanza when it went on
a 10-2 run over the next three minutes, capped by a Polk jumper to take a 33-17
advantage. UNCW closed to within 33-21 with 7:45 remaining before Towson went
on a 13-2 run to take control. The Tigers shot nearly 55 percent from the field
in building a 52-30 halftime advantage. Towson's defense forced 11 turnovers,
resulting in 17 points.
Towson
led by as much as 30 points, at 82-52 midway through the second half. They
finished the game shooting 51 percent (31-61) from the floor and 53 percent
(9-17) from three-point range.
UNCW was
led by junior Dominique Lacy (Florence, S.C.), who scored a team-high 13
points. Junior Ahmad Grant (Peoria, Ill.), freshman Keith Rendleman (Iron
Station, N.C.) and senior Johnny Wolf (Cincinnati, Oh.) each added 10 points.
The
Seahawks shot a solid 49. 2 percent (29-59) from the floor, but committed 18
turnovers to end their season with a 9-22 mark.
Towson advances to tomorrow's CAA quarterfinals
to face top-seeded Old Dominion. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
