CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Carlos Alonso, Delaware
Sr., 3B, Chesterfield, Va./Cosby
Alonso batted .467 (7-15) with five runs scored and three RBI as Delaware won two of three on the road at ACC foe Maryland last weekend. The senior third baseman went 4-for-6 in a 17-3 victory on Saturday and had at least one hit in each game to extend his career-best hitting streak to 19 games. Alonso has reached base safely in all 54 games of his Delaware career.
CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Kevin Ferguson, Northeastern
Fr., LHP, Suffern, N.Y./St. Joseph’s Regional
Ferguson gave up just two hits over six shutout innings in his collegiate debut to lead Northeastern past St. Bonaventure 13-1 last Saturday. The freshman left-hander struck out eight and gave up a pair of walks.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Blake Hauser, VCU
Fr., RHP, Chesterfield, Va./Manchester
Hauser scattered three hits and allowed one earned run over seven innings to earn his first collegiate win in VCU’s 3-2 triumph over Fairfield last Saturday. The rookie right-hander struck out four and didn’t issue a walk.
DIAMOND NOTES:
DELAWARE (2-4)
The Blue Hens took two of three at ACC foe Maryland last weekend. Senior third baseman Carlos Alonso batted .467 (7-15) with five runs scored and three RBI in the series. He extended his career-best hitting streak to 19 games and has reached base safely in all 54 games of his career. Freshman D.J. Long went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI in the Hens’ 17-3 triumph over the Terps last Friday. Junior Pat Dameron had six hits in the series and has at least one hit in all six games this season. Sophomore Devon Pearson earned his first career save after tossing three shutout frames versus Maryland. Junior Steve Ulaky belted his second homer of the season. UD hosts Manhattan this weekend.
GEORGE MASON (4-3)
The Patriots dropped a pair of extra-inning contests to Georgetown last Saturday before edging the Hoyas 9-8 in the series finale. Senior shortstop Ryan Soares batted ..667 (8-12) with a pair of homers, three runs scored and five RBI. For the season, Soares is batting .500 with a pair of homers and has already driven in 13 runs. Mason hopes to open its home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Fordham.
GEORGIA STATE (0-5)
The Panthers are still searching for their first victory after dropping both games of a home-and-home series with USC Upstate last week. Senior Bradley Logan belted his first two homers of the season and junior transfer Marc Micowski was 4-for-8 with a pair of runs scored. Logan ranks fifth on GSU’s career hits list with 215 and is just five runs shy of the Panthers’ all-time mark. Junior pitcher Charley Olson allowed just four hits and one run over six innings in an 8-5 setback. Sophomore Justin Malone gave up only one hit in three innings last Tuesday. GSU hosts Mercer before playing a four-game series with NCCU.
HOFSTRA (0-6)
The Pride dropped three straight games at #2 ranked Florida State last weekend. Hofstra led the Seminoles 2-0 in the series finale before falling 14-4. Senior Elliot Hagburg tops Hofstra with a .444 batting average through five games. He played right field for the first time last Sunday. The Pride pitching staff has hit 19 batters in six games. Hofstra travels to Maryland for a three-game series this weekend as it continues a 12-game road swing.
JAMES MADISON (0-3)
The Dukes went 0-3 at the Baseball at the Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach, including setbacks to nationally ranked Coastal Carolina and UC Irvine. Senior Matt Browning paced JMU with a .417 (5-12) batting average and four RBI. He entered the year ranked 8th among returning players in career doubles and had two in the season opener. JMU hopes to open its new stadium on Wednesday against Longwood before starting an eight-game swing to Florida.
UNC WILMINGTON (3-3)
The Seahawks went 1-2 in their own Hughes Bros. Challenge, picking up a 12-2 win over Morehead State last Saturday. Junior Cameron Roth tossed six scoreless innings versus MSU, allowing only four hits and fanning two. Roth became the first Seahawk starter to earn a decision. Freshman designated hitter Hunter Ridge batted .500 (4-8) with a pair of RBI. He opened his career by reaching base in his first six plate apperances and is batting .529 for the year. UNCW has tallied 10 double plays in six games. The Seahawks are at Campbell before returning home to play Akron and Stony Brook this weekend.
NORTHEASTERN (3-1)
The Huskies opened their Florida swing with a 3-1 mark, defeating Davenport, St. Bonaventure and Western Michigan. Senior outfielder Tony DiCesare batted .500 with four doubles, a homer and seven RBI last week. Freshman second baseman Alan Pastyrnak batted .467 last week, including a 4-for-5 effort with three runs scored in his collegiate debut versus Davenport. Freshman lefty Kevin Ferguson allowed just two hits over six shutout innings to earn the victory against St. Bonaventure. He struck out eight in his collegiate debut. NU meets the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition on Wednesday.
OLD DOMINION (4-4)
The Monarchs fell at #13 East Carolina (11-2) and then lost three of four to Bucknell. Junior left-handed pitcher Kyle Hald improved to 2-0 after striking out a career-high 11 batters in 6.2 innings against Bucknell last Friday. He gave three earned runs in the win. Senior Cameron Scott had a homer and seven RBI in the Bucknell series. Freshman Austin McGowan batted .444 (8-18) with five RBI. He had two hits in all four games of the Bucknell series. The Monarchs meet Mount St. Mary’s and La Salle this week.
TOWSON (1-6)
The Tigers were swept in a four-game series at #2 Arizona State last weekend. Towson batted just .239 as a team, but junior Chris Wychock was a bright spot by hitting .500 (8-16) with a pair of doubles. Senior Kevin Collins batted .313 and drove in two. Pitcher Drew Permison didn’t allow a run in two appearances and struck out seven over 3.1 innings. Freshman Sean Thompson also threw three shutout frames in relief. Towson is batting only .205 this season with runners in scoring position. The Tigers continue their 15-game road trip this week with contests at Maryland and High Point.
VCU (4-3)
The Rams split a four-game home series with Fairfield last weekend. VCU batted just over .200 as a team, but senior Joe Van Meter hit .571 (8-14) with a double, triple and four runs scored. Freshman pitcher Blake Hauser earned his first collegiate win after allowing just a run on three hits over seven innings last Saturday. He struck out four and didn’t issue a walk. Sophomore Michael Graham retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and also earned a win on Saturday. Sophomore Kyle Pelchy hasn’t allowed an earned run over 5.1 frames in three appearances this year. VCU hosts Cleveland State in a three-game series this weekend.
WILLIAM & MARY (3-3)
The Tribe dropped three close games at nationally ranked LSU over the weekend. Freshmen Ryan Brown and Jackson Shaver each drove in three runs as W&M fell 10-9 in Saturday’s opener. Brown was also 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs in the second game of Sunday’s twinbill. In the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader, Jonathan Slattery was 2-for-2 with three RBI. Pitcher Matt Davenport threw five shutout innings in relief on Sunday, allowing just two hits. The Tribe hosts Seton Hall in a three-game series this weekend.
