HOFSTRA'S GILLESPIE, RIDER'S KIRCHNER GARNER WEEKLY ACCOLADES - FEB. 2
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - P.J. Gillespie of Hofstra University and Jimmy Kirchner of Rider University have been named the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestlers of the Week for all competition January 26-February 1. Rider's Jim Resnick is the CAA Rookie of the Week.
Josh Patterson of Binghamton University became the Bearcats' all-time wins leader, breaking a record held by a three-time All-American and Division III Champion of the 1980s.
Gillespie, a sophomore 165 from Long Beach, NY (Long Beach), defeated the 19th ranked wrestler in the nation from Penn, 3-2, in a dual meet last week. With the win Gillespie is now ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News and improved to 25-10 on the season.
Kirchner, a sophomore 133 from Somerville, NJ (Somerville), won by tech fall in a victory over Duquesne and won by fall to tie the score in a victory over Clarion. Kirchner went 9-0 in January, improving to 10-4 in duals.
Gillespie and Kirchner are both ranked second in the CAA in their respective weight classes.
Patterson, a senior 174 from Ontario, NY (Wayne Central), won by fall in a win over Ithaca and his fall against American broke the Binghamton career record of 112 held by Mark Gumble '88. With three victories last week Patterson improves to 20-5, including 12-0 in duals and is ranked 13th by Intermat, 16th by AWN.
Resnick, a freshman 174 from Media, Pa (Penncrest), won both of his matches in Rider's wins over Clarion and Duquesne, including a tech fall to cut the Clarion lead to 16-14 in the Rider come-from-behind victory. Resnick is the fourth ranked 174 in the CAA.
