DREXEL'S MARGINEAN HONORED BY THE PHILADELPHIA SPORTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION
Philadelphia, PA - Hours after receiving her fourth CAA Women's Basketball weekly honor, senior forward Gabriela Marginean was recognized by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association at its annual Awards Banquet in Cherry
Hill, N.J. . The
Philadelphia Sports Writers Association recognized Marginean as its
2009 Outstanding Amateur Athlete on Monday evening.
The PSWA is recognizing Marginean for her performance during Drexel's
2008-09 run to the CAA Championship and its first ever NCAA Tournament.
As a junior that season, Marginean was named CAA Player of the Year and
ranked among the top 5 in the nation in scoring. Marginean joins an
esteemed group of recipients of the PSWA's top amateur athlete honor,
including Matt Ryan (2007), Jameer Nelson (2004), Bryan Westbrook
(1998, 2001), Dawn Staley (1991), Carl Lewis (1981) and Bill Toomey
(1968).
Marginean and the Dragons are playing some of their best basketball of
the season, taking a six-game winning streak into play this week at
Towson and James Madison. Marginean is within 38 points of becoming No.
3 on Philadelphia's all-time women's DI scoring list.
The PSWA Banquet is held annually at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill,
N.J. where the association honors the top athletes, teams and
performances in sport each year.
