CAA FIELD HOCKEY HAS 17 PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-REGION TEAMS

RICHMOND, Va. (November 19, 2009) - Seventeen field hockey players from the Colonial Athletic Association were named to the 2009 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region teams on Thursday.

Seven players received first team All-Region honors while 10 others were named to the second team.

In the Mid-Atlantic region, Susan Ciufo, Carolina Gibernau and Christina Mastropaolo of Drexel made the first team along with Delaware's Casey Howard. Chosen to the Mid-Atlantic second team were Delaware's Michelle Drummonds and Drexel's Sofia Sanguinetti and Kim Tunell.

Ciufo was tied for second in points (51) and third in goals (21) this season in the CAA. She was among the top-20 in goals per game in the NCAA. Gibernau led the league with 15 assists and was tied for seventh with 27 points. Mastropaolo, the 2009 CAA Player of the Year, led the league with 69 points and tied for third in the NCAA in goals scored with 29. She also led the nation with 10 game-winning tallies. Howard was second in the conference with 22 goals, a mark that placed her 11th in the country.

In the Mid-East region, Hofstra's Genna Kovar was honored on the first team while her teammate, Amy-Lee Levey, was named to the second team.

Kovar ranked fourth in the CAA with 15 goals and 35 points and led the Pride to a fourth seed in this year's CAA Championship.

In the Northeast region, Northeastern's Kaela Barker and Crystal Poland made first team, and Huskies' teammate Carolyn Malloy was named to the second team.

Barker tallied five goals and five assists for the Huskies one season after being named the league's top freshman. Poland, the 2009 CAA Rookie of the Year, was fifth in the league with 30 points and seventh in goals scored with 12.

In the South region, Kelsey Cutchins and Dolores de Rooij of James Madison, William and Mary's Wesley Drew, Old Dominion's Kelly Driscoll and VCU's Kelsey Scherrer were all part of the second team.

The 2009 NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year will be announced by the NFHCA Office on Tuesday, Nov. 24, following the NCAA Championship.
